Being Bougie in NYC

Being Bougie in NYC

This year I visited my cousin in New York City. It was really neat because we both moved to new cities, by ourselves, at the same time. I found my cousin, Divya, to be a real source of strength and comfort on days where my new life seemed particularly lonely. Thus, I was over-joyed to be able to visit her in the Big Apple!

Usually when I travel I am very cheap. Insanely so. I might buy one pastry and a bag of grapes and munch on that all day, and not get a real meal. I decided to lighten up on this trend a little, because I was only in NYC for a couple of days. BUT OMG. NYC IS SO EXPENSIVE. I enjoyed the trip, but need to come up with a better financial plan if I ever return.

… Regardless, here are some highlights.

1. Spending time with my Cousin

I know cheesy. But it’s so rare to spend time with people who’ve known you your whole life and still love you! It was just a joy to be able to see the world through her eyes and the city she calls home.

2. The Food Market in Brooklyn

I know, I’m a loser. I can’t remember what the Food Market is called, and theirs 1000x food options in NYC. But, there was a food market in Brooklyn and it was awesome! And I was able to drink out of real fruits!

… but seriously. The fusion cuisine was wonderful, and that is my favourite part of any city.

3. Brooklyn in General

It’s such an up and coming hip part of town. I loved it. Very similar to Edgewood in Atlanta. Totally recommend it.

4. Looking like my Favourite Emoji.

You know the one with the woman dancing in a red dress. Yup, that was me. And I still gush over that moment. Can’t help it. Everything in the photo below also donated from my cousin… because broke hippie Jiwan for life!

5. The Financial District

My cousin kept laughing because she said she knew I was not from the city because I spent most of my time looking up at the Sky Scrapers. But they were soooo tall!

6. Joe’s Pizza & Dragon Acai Bowls

It’s as good as it is advertised. Especially at 3 am. 🙂

7. The Waterfront view!

8. Holding the snake..

yes! That is where that photo is from!

That being said, there were things I did not enjoy about NYC.

like:

  1. Times Square. I thought it was dirty and over-crowded. Definitely not a fan.
  2. Prices. Prices. Prices. Everything is so expensive in the city. The Uber from the airport was $60. Atlanta prices definitely had me spoiled.
  3. Loneliness. Maybe this is me over thinking it, but there is definitely a colder harsher vibe of NYC that I had not experienced in some of the other cities I visited. It may just be me, but it made me a little sad. But at the same time… it is a city, and that happens. Oh well.

But all in all it was a great trip. Left me a little poor. But great trip!
